Watching Them Watch Us: Northwest Turnpike near Romney, Day 1 - 9:00 a.m.

At 9:00 a.m. on Day One of the campaign, two small Federal cavalry units moved out of Romney, one heading west on the Northwest Turnpike and one heading north on Green Spring Road. They found themselves immediately under the observation of Confederate cavalrymen posted across the turnpike at Kern.

The Federals heading north passed the Rinkey farm and then disappeared up the road after crossing Big Run. Those moving west along the turnpike stopped at Taylor, a safe distance from the Confederate horsemen up the road. The opposing cavalry on the Northwest Turnpike have maintained their positions and are observing each other.
