Through Day 1 of THE WINTER WAR campaign, the only contact was between opposing cavalry units. On the morning of Day 2, a small detachment of Federal infantry was part of a picket line that made contact with approaching enemy cavalry at Okonoko. By noon on Day 2, Confederate Infantry has arrived on the field at Romney and Okonoko.
If Lander had the initiative on Day 1 when he moved his cavalry across the Potomac and its South Branch, Jackson seems to be the first to press his infantry up to the rivers. We await the outcome of the midday contact....
