Setting up an Outpost

One of the players asked about special rules for setting up an outpost. There are no special rules for this aside from movement orders and possibly detachment orders. An outpost is a function that a unit (usually small unit) serves. It is deployed somewhere to provide an early warning of an enemy advance. When an enemy force is encountered by an outpost, the player will receive a contact report.

To set up an outpost, all a player has to do is send a unit to a particular location. Cavalry companies or infantry detachments are good for this. For example, part of daily orders might include: "Colonel Anderson of the 3rd Arkansas is to detach 100 men and have them set up an outpost at W. Taylor (Taylor's Ford)."   Or something simpler: "Capt. Scheetz of Company "F" (Ashby's Cavalry) is to advance to East Mileson Ford (Middle Fords) and await further orders."

The units will go to those locations and wait there until they have other orders, or make contact with the enemy. No further orders are necessary for the outpost.
