Foraging

One way to avoid complete reliance on commissary trains is by spreading units out across the campaign theatre and keeping the enemy at bay. This will allow the men to send out forage parties at night under simulation rules for foraging and "supportable garrisons."  These rules may overstate the amount that could be foraged through the campaign, but idea the rules is to discourage concentration of the armies except for battle.
------------

Foraging and Supportable Garrisons

Cavalry: Cavalry units will forage and live off the land during THE WINTER WAR simulation and will never be out of commissary supplies.

Outposts: A detachment or unit of 200 men or less that is the only friendly force at a locality will forage each night for the next day’s rations regardless of any enemy presence.

Nightly Foraging:  Localities in THE WINTER WAR simulation have commissary supplies in local barns and stores in the area.  Units will send out foraging details to acquire commissary supplies between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.  as long as there are not 50 or more enemy present at the Locality.  Each Locality has a specified maximum number of men for whom it can provide rations each night. This is considered the Locality’s maximum Supportable Garrison.

Supportable Garrisons: If there is less than 50 enemy  present and the strength of friendly units bivouacked for the night at a locality is less than the maximum supportable garrison, foraging details will supply each man with one day’s rations at 6:00 a.m. the next morning.

Maximum Supportable Garrisons are as follows:

·         Bases of Supply (Cumberland, Bloomery Gap,): Unlimited Friendly / 4,250 enemy

·         Romney: 9,000 men

·         Other Objectives (Green Spring Depot, Slanesville, Springfield, Three Churches, Burlington): 6,000 men

·         All Other Localities: 4,250 men.
