Day One of THE WINTER WAR command simulation was all about cavalry doing their job of scouting and screening. On both sides, some infantry units marched long distances throughout the day. There was no infantry contact, however, so infantry bivouacs for the night of January 14th are unknown to the enemy.
Some of Lander's cavalry crossed the South Branch of the Potomac and made contact with the enemy, but quickly withdrew from Lowell's Cross Roads and Three Churches. Federal cavalry took a cautious approach after making contact with enemy cavalry on the Northwest Turnpike near Romney. After observing the enemy throughout the morning and early afternoon, they decided to attack at 3:00 p.m., resulting in a Skirmish at Kern's Farm.
Kern's Farm stands as the first engagement of the simulated campaign. Federal Cavalry, identified as the First Virginia Cavalry (US), drove off two companies of Ashby's cavalry after a short, but spirited fight. There were about 20 casualties from the 2,280 rounds of ammunition expended during the engagement. No officers were lost.
Most of the contact through Day One of the campaign was made by units commanded by captains. The highest ranking officer to view the enemy was a Lieutenant Colonel. Players have been provided with evening reports and may submit their next orders when ready.
Because all of the points possible for the day were awarded, it is clear to both players that the Federals occupy Burlington, Green Spring Depot, Springfield and Romney. Confederates occupy Slanesville and Three Churches. It looks like a Federal victory on day one, strategically occupying the most territory, while scoring a tactical victory at Kern's Farm. But... the campaign is only just beginning.
