Federal Infantry at Rhodes Farm has engaged a battalion of Ashby's Cavalry. Lieut. Col. Ashby is believed to be leading the battalion. Ashby skirmished with a Pennsylvania and Illinois Regiment and held his own, until the Federals unlimbers a battery of 12 pounders across the road and opened fire with all six guns.
Ashby's men have made a quick withdrawal to the south and then turned east towards Timber Ridge, with the Federals firing a few parting shots from their battery. The Federals are collecting their wounded, but hear the sound of approaching infantry through the mist from the south....
