More on Romney - Day 2

Day Two of the campaign is over and Confederates have already submitted their orders for Day 3. During the morning Day Two, Federal cavalry held Romney with an outpost at Kern. A little before noon, Colonel Erastus Tyler arrived with his brigade of infantry and two batteries. Around the same time, Colonel Burks and Taliaferro arrived with the Hampden Light Artillery and forced the cavalry at Kern to withdraw.

After a minor engagement at Malone, the Federals pulled back to Mileson, unaware that Maj. Gen. Jackson had arrived with Garnett's Brigade and three additional batteries. Once Jackson had identified the Federal position, he sent Garnett's Brigade through the woods to attack the Federal right, as Burks and Taliaferro moved against the Federal center and right.

Federal artillery fired canister into the attacking Confederates, but the Federals were forced to retreat, giving up the field. Confederates suffered 970 casualties to 870 Federal losses, but as a % of men engaged, Federals had a higher loss of 21% against 13% on the Confederate side.
