Battle!: Romney - Day 2 - 3:00 p.m. - Scouting the enemy positions

Shortly after 12:45 p.m., the opposing forces at Romney lost visual contact with each other as the Federals moved westward and the Confederates repositioned their line east of town.

Around 2:00 p.m., Federal cavalry at the junction of the Green Spring and Jersey Mountain Roads west of Nelson observed Confederate infantry moving through town to deploy at its western edge. A brigade of Confederate infantry advanced north up Green Spring Road and deployed at Big Run, with a battery deploying west of Riker. The battery opened fire and the cavalry fled into the woods to the northwest.

Around the same time, a senior Confederate officer appeared on the Northwest Turnpike, southwest of the Hook Farm. He was able to see Federal infantry and artillery in position south of Sulphur Spring Run and west of Mileson, with its left flank near the South Branch of the Potomac.

With the exception of a few artillery rounds fired at the cavalry near Nelson, there was no firing from 1:45 to 3:00 p.m. and there were no casualties.

The next turn is not expected until sometime next week.
