Battle! Romney - Day 2, 4:00 p.m. - Jackson Secures Romney

As the Confederates pressed the Federal line, some Federal batteries limbered and galloped down the Northwest Turnpike towards the covered bridge. Others began to break and retreated.  Burks' Brigade pressed the Union left and caused the 1st Virginia to break to the rear. As Garnett's Brigade pressed the Federal right, the 66th Ohio was forced to retreat.
The 7th Ohio and 7th Indiana held briefly on the Northwest Turnpike, as Burks moved around their left, Garnett was advancing on their right and Taliaferro and batteries were crossing Sulphur Spring Run. The 7th Ohio broke and the 7th Indiana followed, running the gauntlet between Burks and Garnett.

On the Federal cavalry harassing Garnett's left flank prevented them from the cutting off the retreat of the last Union regiments to retire.

Garnett and Burks advanced to the covered bridge, with Garnett securing the west side of the bridge at Evan's Farm, but Tyler's force was in full retreat.

Jackson's aggressive assaults at the Mileson Farm battered Tyler's force, but sustained heavy casualties from canister fire before Tyler's guns retired. In the end, Jackson holds Romney and all Federals have been forced to withdrawal by 4:30 p.m. Colonel Erastus Tyler now retreats down the Northwest Turnpike towards Mechanicsburg.

Total Losses on the Field:

Federal: 870
Confederate:970
