Day 3 - 6:00 a.m. - Withdrawal at Old Town, Firing at Romney

At 6:00 a.m. on Day 3 of the Campaign (January 16th), a Confederate infantry brigade east of Old Town Maryland decided not to engage the enemy near Green Spring Depot and retired down the Potomac Turnpike back in the direction of Okonoko.

Federals at Romney held their position at the Leith Farm on Green Spring Road, to the north of town. Two Confederate batteries have opened fire on them and a Federal battery to the left rear of their line has also opened fire. A small detachment of sharpshooters has moved up on the Federal right and opened fire on Confederate batteries. So far, neither side has advanced to engage at closer range. The Confederate infantry, perhaps in an act of defiance, have turned their backs to the enemy.

Because the number of Federals on the field is less than 3,500 men, this engagement is being fought under AI.
