Day 5 Morning Phase - Federal Infantry Sighted Near Mechanicsburg Gap
On the morning of Day 5 (January 18, 1862) Confederate cavalry advancing from Romney encountered a Federal force at Spitzer, on the east side of the Mechanicsburg (Mill Creek) Gap. As Union artillerymen began to deploy to open fire, the rebel horsemen quickly returned to Romney.
