The two fronts at Romney (Leith and the Covered Bridge) had two different results between 11:20 and 11:40 a.m. At Leith, the Federals began an assault on a position believed to be weakened. The assault was only intended to be a probe, but they 67th Ohio and 1st Company Andrews' Sharpshooters ended up routed from the field after heavy fire from three regiments of the "Stonewall Brigade," support by Capt. Chew's Battery. Colonel Nathan Kimball was wounded and captured during the attack.
At the Covered Bridge, Captain Waters' Hampden Light Artillery was reduced to one gun as the men of Lander's 3rd Brigade charged across the bridge, led by the 110th Pennsylvania. There was a sharp fight with the 2nd and 4th Virginia that exacted heavy loss from the Union troops, but the Confederates were forced to retreat. The Confederates withdrew to Romney town as the Federals regroups, called up their artillery to the east side of the river, and began their advance on Romney town.
