Colonel Dunning's Brigade (2nd Brigade, Lander's Division, Army of the Potomac) fell back through Lowell's Cross Roads with Capt. Daum's Battery "A" West Virginia Artillery. They started taking a position on a hill northwest of town as Colonel Jesse Burks' Brigade began to arrive and deploy in town, with two Confederate batteries deploying in the fields east of town.
The two sides started shelling each other, with Dunning shifting his position slightly across the Potomac Turnpike. Capt. Daum's Battery was placed directly across the road at the crest of the hill, with infantry in support and in the woods on either side of the road. As the two sides shelled each other, Brigadier General Samuel Reed Anderson's Tennessee Brigade arrived. It moved towards town and the moved by the right oblique into the woods northeast of town, commencing what appeared to be a flanking movement against the Union left. Dunning responded by moving his right-most regiment to re-enforce his left.
At 17:40 p.m., Anderson appears to be advancing through the woods towards the Union left. Burks' Brigade is maintaining its position in Lowell's Cross Roads town.
