The heaviest losses by % of opening strength during the morning phase (Day 1) were as follows:
Confederate:
1. West Augusta Artillery (Capt. Waters): 44%
2. 2nd Virginia (Garnett's Brigade): 32%
3. 4th Virginia (Garnett's Brigade): 27%
These units were engaged against Lander's 3rd Brigade (Tyler) at the covered bridge and unsuccessful defense of Romney town.
Union:
1. 1st Company Andrews Sharpshooters (unassigned unit): 44%
2. 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (3rd Brigade): 20%
3. 14th Indiana Infantry (1st Brigade): 19%
Each unit was engaged in different areas. The sharpshooters were engaged in an overly aggressive probe at Leith that resulted in disaster. The 7th Ohio was engaged at Romney, particularly in the attack into Romney town. The 14th Indiana was part of the attack up the Old Romney Road and into Three Churches.
