Continued Fighting at Three Churches - Day 1 - 11:40-12:00

The Federal assaulted the Confederate position at J. Saville at around 11:40 a.m. on Day 1 of the campaign. The center of the Federal line took heavy canister fire from the Rockbridge Artillery, and the 14th Indiana was forced back. The 39th Illinois and 7th Virginia (US) engaged the enemy, as the 84th Pennsylvania, on the right of the Union line, extended beyond the Confederate left and opened fire.  The Confederate line began to collapse and their artillery withdrew to Three Churches town as the militia attempted to hold on.

The militia eventually broke and fled to take a position in town.
