Battle! - Romney Day 2 - 3:25 p.m. - Heavy Fighting

As the Confederate line at Sulphur Spring Run advanced, the Federals opened fire. The center regiment in the Confederate line, advancing on Northwest Turnpike, was the first to take canister fire from the Federal guns and began to waver.

To the west of the turnpike (Confederate right), Confederates crossed Sulphur Spring Run and engaged the Federal infantry opposing their advance.

As the Confederate left advanced through the Mileson farm and engaged the Federal right, the regiment on the Federal left gave way. This exposed the left-most Federal section of artillery, which continues to fire canister into the Confederate right. Unobstructed by supporting infantry, the Confederates are fire on the guns in a test to see which can withstand the other's fire the longest.

Federal canister fire is extremely heavy against the Confederate center on the Northwest Turnpike. One regiment had already been forced back. The line closed the gap, but another regiment was forced back.

The Confederate left at Mileson is holding strong in the face of Federal musket fire and canister, but the right-most Federal section is withdrawing.

At 3:25 p.m., each side is stressed, the Confederates breaking in their center and the Federals on their flanks. All infantry has been engaged and taking losses. Five minutes left in the turn....
