Morning Phase - Day 5: Federals take Three Churches

At 11:00 a.m., Federal cavalry approached Three Churches from the north along the Jersey Mountain Road and from the west on the Old Romney Road.

The cavalry detachment coming from Middle Fords met some Confederate infantry and a battery posted near the Greenwalt Farm. Two detachments coming southward from Points Cross Roads met Confederate cavalry at the A. Hines farm. Previous probes to Three Churches during the first four days of the campaign resulted in the Federals turning back. On the morning of Day 5, the cavalry was supported by infantry and artillery that arrived from Points Cross Roads.

When the Union infantry arrived, the Confederate forces departed, some heading towards Romney and others towards Dutch Lick School. At noon, elements of Lander's Division occupy Three Churches for the first time during campaign.
